About Murali
Murali has been a proud resident of Sunnyvale’s District 3 for more than twenty‑five years. His deep connection to the community shapes his commitment to public service and his belief in a Sunnyvale where every neighborhood feels supported, informed, and engaged.
He served as President of the Ortega Park Neighborhood Association, where he helped strengthen community involvement and champion neighborhood priorities. He has also served on the boards of Leadership Sunnyvale and Sunnyvale Community Services, supporting leadership development and essential services for families across the city. In 2021, the City of Sunnyvale honored him as the Distinguished Resident of the Year in recognition of his dedication and service.
Murali’s journey began in Bangalore, India, where he grew up in a challenging environment guided by parents who emphasized hard work, education, and caring for others. He graduated at the top of his engineering class before immigrating to the United States to pursue new opportunities. He went on to build a successful career in the software and technology industry, working as an engineer and technology executive at organizations including Sun Microsystems, WhoWhere?, Automated License Systems, and General Electric, and consulting for Ariba/SAP and Amazon.com. He also founded and led several successful startups, gaining hands‑on experience in innovation, fiscal responsibility, and problem‑solving.
He holds master’s degrees in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and Engineering Management from Stanford University. He often describes his professional path as the 4Es: Engineer, Executive, Entrepreneur, and now Elected.
Since moving to Sunnyvale in 1997, Murali has been actively involved in community organizations including Leadership Sunnyvale, Sunnyvale Community Services, Sankara Eye Foundation, the Ortega Park Neighborhood Association, and the South Asian Cultural Association of Sunnyvale. He also served on the Sustainability Commission, contributing to long‑term environmental planning and community resilience.
Murali brings strong analytical skills, fiscal discipline, and a collaborative approach to public service. His diverse background—as an engineer, executive, entrepreneur, and community leader—shapes his commitment to thoughtful, inclusive, and effective governance.
He often describes this chapter as American Dream 2.0: the opportunity to give back to the community that gave him so much. He looks forward to continuing his service to the people of Sunnyvale with dedication, integrity, and a shared vision for the future.
